Bertie Martin was born in Burwell [Newmarket Q4-1895 3B:533], son of Charles Henry and Elizabeth MARTIN (née HALL).
1901 census...Aged 5, 'Birt' was at North Street, Burwell with his father Charles H MARTIN [37] furnace man at manure factory, born Wicken; his mother Elizabeth [35]; brother Thomas [6] and sister Elsie [3]. All except his father were born in Burwell 1911 census...Aged 15, a labourer at brickworks, he was at North Street, Burwell with his parents, brother Thomas (stoker at manure works), sisters Elsie and Dorothy [10] and brother John [5] both born in Burwell. His mother had lost 3 of her 9 children. His father's address around the time of his death was Burnt Yard, Burwell |

Bertie and his chum Gunner Neaves, from Rye, were the only two of his battery to die that day. Exactly where is not known, but Westoutre was very close to the
front line at that time.
